TYPES OF WOOD: -
We normally use following types of wood for the production of wood handicrafts and wooden items. We pay extreme attention to the seasoning of the wood planks. The thinner planks are seasoned in the seasoning plant while the thicker planks are kept in a particular solar seasoning plant for six months. The carvings are finished by machine as well as by hands to give the final smooth finish to the surface of the carvings’ designs. Our woods having following properties as described below.
1: MAHOGANY:
The color of this wood is light and dark red. This is the best wood for carvings and finishing. It is particularly used by custom furniture makers due to its light weight, sharpness in carving and durability. This wood may be polished by natural polishes or it may take any synthetic paint color. This is the best carving wood; hence we normally use it to develop all of our new designs. All small and delicate appliques as well as large corbels are carved better in this wood. All designs like appliqués, swags, corbels, brackets, drops, carved flowers and other decorative wood carvings are produced in this wood to yield the best result.
2: PINE:
The color of this wood is yellowish white and sometime brownish. Pine is mostly used for large sized wood furniture and as timber for architectural buildings due to its light weight and strength. Its annual rings, also known as “grain,” are the most attractive part of its beauty in carvings. These rings appear in the form of natural grain strips. This wood can only be polished with natural wood polish, so that its natural grain may appear through the colorless polish. It does not take any synthetic color paint as it already contains wood resins. This wood is particularly used by our British buyers for all designs such as appliqués, swags, corbels, brackets, drops, carved flowers and other decorative wood carvings. It is best for carvings of flowers, swags, shells and all size carvings. Architectural wood carvings and building construction companies in Europe purchase wood carvings and produce architectural salvages in this wood.
3: INDIAN PAPRI:
This is a very brittle wood and the color of it is whitish yellow. Carvings are always resulting with very sharp edges. It accepts natural wood polish as well as synthetic paint. It has no grain. This naturally yellowish white Indian wood is mostly used for all kind of small and medium Applique carvings. Large sized appliqués with less thickness cannot be effectively produced with it. Large sized corbels and other carvings with thickness can be best produced with it. All designs like appliqués, swags, corbels, brackets, drops, carved flowers and other decorative wood carvings are architecturally done in this wood. It is best for all type of paint application.
4: MANGO:
Mango wood is somewhat white in color with blackish stains scattered throughout. It is normally used only for those carvings which are painted with synthetic color paint after carving. Natural wood polish does not appear attractive on it. Mango wood is normally good for free standing carvings like candle stands, lamp bases and statues. It is also best for picture frames, which are ultimately painted in various colors. All designs like appliqués, swags, corbels, brackets, drops, carved flowers and other decorative wood carvings are mainly produced in this wood for the single purpose of the painted appearance on the carvings.
5: SHEESHAM:
Sheesham wood is Blackish red in color and is the strongest Indian answer to Teak and other strong woods. It has replaced the Walnut wood from wood furniture industry in India. It is as strong as teak, as grained as pine, as dark as mahogany, and produces the best result for finishes of carvings. It is good for natural polish as well as any type of paint. Sheesham wood contains all qualities that may exist in any type of wood. It is best for applied carvings and very good for carved furniture and fireplace mantles. It is mostly known as timber wood. All designs like appliqués, swags, corbels, brackets, drops, carved flowers and other decorative woodcarvings are the right application to this hard and dark wood in architectural buildings for custom as well as applied carvings.
6: TEAK:
TEAK is one of the hardest woods in India and is mainly used in the home construction industry and by furniture manufacturers. It is more then 35% more expensive then Pine and looks like a mixture of Red Oak and Cherry. All architectural wood carvings in teak are used in churches and other expensive projects. It is the best for material for smaller carvings and can be polished to highlight the grain of the wood visible through the stain. Teak is one of the most preferred woods for furniture makers for chairs, tables and beds etc. Teak beds can be decorated with the teak carvings. It is also well known for its durable sharp edges in the furniture.
We have recently launched some of our new designs in hard woods like MAPLE, WALNUT, CHERRY, ASH, BIRCH and OAK.
SEASONING:
Prior to any application, all the wood we use is seasoned in our solar area as well as in our kiln drying wood seasoning plant. We use wood blanks when their moisture content is in the range of 12 to 17%. It reduces further during and after carving. We keep a large quantity of wood in our raw stock, which is used for carvings for many years. It provides natural seasoning. Also, all the wood planks are chemically treated before use for all types of pest and worm control. Some wood that we do not season is imported from other countries and is already well seasoned and certified chemically treated. It is emphasized at this point that the wood is a natural substance, hence it may contain some residual moisture other defect as a result of movement to a different climatic environment. Any minor difference in the specified standard of quality will be acceptable.
FINISHING:
Finishing is a very important part of our process since our carvings will be rendered more attractive with appropriate treatment. In India, machine work is done only for some larger and thicker carvings. Most of the delicate parts of the carvings are sanded manually with abrasive papers by skilled workers. Sanding by hand is done in our factories under the able supervision of the skilled and experienced quality control inspectors who evaluate every variation in originality of design and quality of carvings. We use international quality sandpaper and adhesives that do not alter the original texture of the wood. Three types of brush are used to enable the carvings to shine at their highest clarity and are an important factor in the finishing process. All designs such as appliqués, swags, corbels, brackets, drops, carved flowers and other decorative wood carvings as well as wooden and marine instruments and nautical brass products are especially finished with by hand for maximum luster. Items such as ship wheels, antique reproduction of the century old telephone sets, key chains and rings, telescopes, compasses, sand timers, helmets and other antique as well as reproduction items are finished using century-old hand finish techniques.
PACKAGING:
We have extensive experience in packing for export. We assure that the delicate carvings, once packed, must be received by the client in pristine condition. All items are first packed in three-ply small inner boxes with adequate shredded paper insulation. Pieces in the small inner boxes are restrained with rubber bands or plastic ties before packing. This is done to further resist damage in transit. All inner small boxes containing carvings are put in larger nine-ply outer cartons and sealed with adhesive packing tape. The outer cartons are then wrapped in a plastic sheath to prevent moisture incursion. Finally, the boxes are tied with the plastic strips to further secure the goods contained within. The packing is done per the government ruling for exporters. All delicate carvings are packed with adequate paper insulation in the inner as well as outer boxes.
